Drivers who have their car stolen will be able to learn of their misfortune by text message, using an innovative security system, soon to be launched by BT.

The technology will also allow security companies and the police to track the path of vehicles across Europe or automatically turn off the engine.

BT Redcare, a subsidiary of the telecom firm, which specializes in security and tracking technology, is behind the scheme.

It works by implanting an extra microchip into the Global positioning Satellite computers that manufacturers already install to provide directions on many vehicles.

Someone signed up to the service would have to send a four digit personal security code by text message every time they use the car.

If the car is taken by a thief, and the code is not sent, a central computer will be alerted, allowing security staff to contact the police and send a warning text to the owner.
