PH3 - Helping the disabled The elderly and less physically able have long made up a significant proportion of pharmacy’s customers and pharmacists have mostly gone out of their way to help. In accordance with new legal requirements, you have until 2004 to make ‘reasonable adjustments’ so your premises comply with the Disability Discrimination Act’s requirements. These involve: Wheelchair access into the shop; Wide aisles; Clear signs and adequate lighting for the partially sighted; Loop systems for the hard of hearing; Possibly drop down counters; Gadgets such as pen grips to make prescription signing easier. Note, the act states "reasonable" adjustments. A small corner shop pharmacy is unlikely to be required to refit their whole pharmacy so as to have wider aisles. |
